ASB Classic Day 7: Williams and Wozniacki continue hot form

DAY 7 of the ASB Classic saw only three matches take place, seeing yet another American make it through to the next round and some tight battles.

Serena Williams got Day 7 off to a rocking start with a solid win against fellow American, Christina McHale. McHale got off on the right foot with a stellar first set against the former world number one, before faltering in the second and third. While Williams started slow, she used her experience and strategic nous to work her way back into the game, with speed and precision crucial to create errors for her American counterpart, collecting the 3-6 6-2 6-3 win to head into the quarter finals.

Despite a strong effort from left-handed Swiss, Jil Teichmann, it was not enough to get her over the line against German fifth seed, Julia Goerges. Goerges was clinical in the first set, creating a break and maintaining it to ensure Teichmann did not work her way back into the set. Goerges continued that form in the second, collecting a 3-6 2-6 victory.

The final match of the round saw fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki take on another American in Lauren Davis. Wozniacki flexed her muscles in the opening set to get off to a hot start with Davis only securing one game in the first, before lifting her intensity in the second and winning to push the match to a third set. But it was experience that once again prevailed with Wozniacki cleaning up 6-1 4-6 6-4 and moving ahead to the next round.
