ATP ASB Classic: Day 2 – Millman advances through to next round
JUST three matches took place on the second day of the ASB Classic in Auckland, as three players are set for a huge day of action today with back-to-back matches. Spaniards Feliciano Lopez and Pablo Andujar play first up today with the winner to face number one seed Fabio Fognini later in the day – with Fognini well rested from a bye in Round 1. Elsewhere, French seventh seed Adrian Mannarino takes on Italian Andreas Seppi in the opening match of the day, with the winner to advance through and play Brit, Kyle Edmund later in the afternoon. Meanwhile, Argentinian lucky loser Leonardo Mayer and Italian Marco Cecchinato go head-to-head after Lopez and Andujar for the right to face Frenchman, Ugo Humbert later in the day.
Of the three games played yesterday, Edmund had to battle hard but eventually got past Spanish wildcard, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-2 4-6 6-3. Meanwhile Australia’s third ranked player John Millman moved through unscathed despite a challenge from American qualifier Michael Mmoh. Millman won 7-6 6-4 and now has to face Russian third seed, Karen Khachanov. Canadian qualifier Vasek Pospisil won his first round encounter against Portugal’s Joao Sousa 6-4 6-2 to create the dream match-up suggested in yesterday’s review, taking on second seed countryman, Denis Shapovalov.
Other than the matches already stated, reigning champion Tennys Sandgren begins Day 2 against fourth seed countryman John Isner, Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro combats fifth seed Frenchman Benoit Paire, and Swedish qualifier Mikael Ymer faces sixth seed Polish player, Hubert Hurkacz.
