ATP Fantasy Tennis Rankings post Miami Open: Pospisil bolts into top 50
IN an update to our fantasy tennis competition, we have adjusted the ATP Tour rankings accordingly following the conclusion of Miami Open. We will update both the ATP and WTA Tours once major tournaments are completed and name the key bolters and sliders since the last update.
BOLTERS:
Vasek Pospisil +44 (#93 to #49)
A semi-finals appearance for the Canadian was exactly what the doctor ordered at Miami and after some unfortunate injury setbacks, he is back in a big way. Now inside the top 50, Pospisil will automatically qualify for just about every tournament, and if he can continue his rise, he might even be seeded at a Grand Slam before year’s end. It is a long way to go, but the signs are promising.
Andy Murray +28 (#129 to #101)
Similar to Pospisil, Murray is returning to the circuit post-retirement and having those awful injury issues. Now back, he can clearly still match it with the best as he showed reaching a quarter final before bowing out to Alexander Zverev. He toppled Daniil Medvedev in the Round of 16 though, so if Murray can have a bit of luck – and do well at the upcoming tournaments – expect him to fire inside the top 100 without any trouble.
Brandon Nakashima +56 (#220 to #164)
The young gun was only in his second tournament, but for the world 220th to reach the Round of 16, it was a magical run. He did not have a smooth run to the fourth round either. In that time, he shocked Nick Kyrgios, Matteo Berrettini and Jan-Lennard Struff who are top 30 players at their best. He pushed David Goffin before losing 6-4 7-6 in that Round of 16, but he certainly put the Tour on notice.
SLIDERS:
John Isner -11 (#21 to #32)
After winning the Miami title in 2018 and reaching the final last year, it was always going to be a tough ask for Isner to back up and go for a third straight final. He ran into Zverev in the Round of 16 which was a good effort, but his draw was tough, only just getting past Karen Khachanov in the third round following his win over Fernando Verdasco in the Round of 64. He drops to only just inside the Grand Slam seeding places and will be hoping for a better return in coming tournaments.
Felix Auger Aliassime -5 (#19 to #24)
Not a huge drop compared to the others, but the 19-year-old drops back outside the top 20. A shock Round of 64 loss saw him fall behind some of his contemporaries, and while there was no disgrace in losing to American Reilly Opelka in his home country, Auger Aliassime falls back into the mid-20s pack. He will head to the next tournaments as a higher seed and hopefully have a better draw to jump back inside that top 20.
Frances Tiafoe -27 (#75 to #102)
The American keeps tumbling down the rankings and unfortunately he has now fallen outside the top 100. Ranked 102nd in the world, he faces the prospect of having to qualify for a number of tournaments coming up. He lost 170 points in his drop from losing to James Duckworth in the first round after making a quarter final in Miami a year earlier. Tiafoe must now play well on the clay circuit to ensure automatic entry at Roland Garros.
