ATP Finals – Tsitsipas and Thiem to face off in decider

STEFANOS Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem will contest the 2019 ATP Finals title overnight with the two Group leaders winning their respective semi-finals. Tsitsipas defeated third seed Roger Federer 6-3 6-4, while Thiem moved through to the final match on the ATP Tour calendar with a 7-5 6-3 triumph over seventh seed Alexander Zverev. Both players have won three of a possible four games heading into the final with plenty of confidence to be gained from victory.

Tsitsipas just made the most of his opportunities in a game where the Swiss Master could consider himself a little unlucky, but also uncharacteristically failing to make the most of his. The Greek sixth seed converted three of his four break points, while Federer was comparatively one from 12 on the same measure. Across both service and returning, or a the net, Federer was at least equal to the task, winning 70 per cent at the net compared to his opponents’ 50 per cent. His first serve percentage was down on his usual output at just 56 per cent, but it was ultimately Tsitsipas’ defensive work, digging deep to defend his serve with a 92 per cent strike rate of saving break points that helped the young up-and-comer to make the final.

Thiem’s win was a little more impressive on serve, taking down his German opponent with 21 winners and a massive first serve percentage of 81. He also saved all four break point opportunities, while breaking his opponent three times on his way to the 7-5 6-3 victory. Zverev was not without positives from the match, serving a much higher 74 per cent of his first serves in (compared to Tsitsipas’ 59 per cent) but won just 69 per cent of those opportunities. He faltered on the second serve (47 per cent) and hit 25 unforced errors, for a return of 19 winners. Now the Austrian heads through the final match to see if his strong work on serve can continue against Tsitsipas.
