ATP Tour title winners: Bublik stuns Zverev

IT was a memorable day of finals on the ATP Tour as a brand new title-winner was crowned, one broke a three-year drought and another came from two breaks down in the deciding set to salute. Here are the results from the three ATP Tour finals across the globe.

ATP TOUR

OPEN SUD DE FRANCE:

Montpellier, France | ATP 250 | Hard

[6] Alexander Bublik (KAZ) defeated [1] Alexander Zverev (GER) 6-4 6-3

The Kazakhstan sixth seed finally broke his ATP Tour final drought, winning in his fifth attempt at a decider. It also culminated in the biggest win of his career, stunning the world number three German, to capture his first Top 5 victory on Tour. The match lasted just 70 minutes as Bublik won 86 per cent of his first serve points, and actually make it the second time he has ousted the German in the last two seasons.

“I played four finals before and [in] the fifth final I have won against a great player against Sascha,” Bublik said post-match. “It is great. All my game came together. I was serving well and returned well and kept my nerve. I was lucky in the moments and when I had my chances I used them.”

CORDOBA OPEN:

Cordoba, Argentina | ATP 250 | Clay

[6] Albert Ramos-Vinolas (ESP) defeated [Q] Alejandro Tabilo (CHI) 4-6 6-3 6-4

Sixth seeded Spaniard Ramos-Vinolas ended the dream run of Chilean qualifier Tabilo in a remarkable come-from-behind win. Dropping the first set and going a break down in the second set – then two breaks down in the decided – Ramos-Vinolas found a way to fight back, winning the final five games of the match to come back from 1-4 down in the third set to close out the match in two hours and 41 minutes, going one better than his 2021 final.

TATA OPEN MAHARASHTRA:

Pune, India | ATP 250 | Clay

Joao Sousa (POR) defeated [6] Emil Ruusuvuori (FIN) 7-6 4-6 6-1

Sousa ended sixth seeded Ruusuvuori’s dream of a maiden ATP Tour title, claiming his fourth in the process with a three set win at Pune. The experienced Portugese player and world number 137 won the first set in an 11-9 tiebreaker, then came back from losing the second set to storm to victory in the third set, and win his first ATP Tour title since 2018.

“[It’s] a great week for me,” Sousa said after winning the title. “As I said yesterday, we’ve had a few tough moments in the past two years, and to get the title today is just a dream come true. If you’d asked me six months ago if I would be in a final, I would have said no.”
