ATP Tour wrap: Upsets set the tone at ATP 250 events
A HUGE day of results played out across the trio of ATP 250 tournaments, as a couple of huge upsets set the tone.
In the Switzerland Round of 16, Czech qualifier – and ATP Tour debutant – Vit Kopriva pulled off an impressive upset over number one seed Denis Shapovalov, coming from behind to claim a huge 2-6 6-3 6-2 result. The career-best win came off the back of an 82 per cent winning rate on his first serve, and utilising the Top 10 Canadian’s unforced error rate. Kopriva will take on another upset winner in Mikael Ymer, after the Swede overcame eighth seed Feliciano Lopez in a massive 6-7(6) 7-6(7) 6-4 battle. Neither player was willing to give an inch throughout the two hour and 25-minute matchup, as Ymer and Lopez finished off evenly matched for points won on 116 apiece, but Ymer getting the last laugh pulling through the final set. Elsewhere, the third and sixth seeds both claimed wins as Norway’s Casper Ruud overcame Austrian Dennis Novak in a tight 6-4 7-6(5) result, and Benoit Paire earned an easy finish and entry to the quarter finals following Tallon Griekspoor‘s retirement at the end of the first set.
In Mexico, it was a fully Western-based day of quarter finals action, with the four matches seeing five American competitors out on the court, a couple of Australians and a Brit to finish things off. A battle of seeded Americans in Taylor Fritz (third seed) and Steve Johnson (sixth) saw the higher-ranked of the duo reign supreme 6-4 6-4 in his second event following a meniscus injury during the Roland Garros, appearing the better for it with 11 aces and an 80 per cent winning rate off his first serve to close out the victory in 92 minutes. He will take on first seed Cameron Norrie for a semi-final position, after the Brit sped through a 6-1 6-1 result over qualifying American Ernesto Escobedo. Two Australian-American clashes were set, with hard-hitting second seed John Isner claiming a 6-3 6-4 victory over Alex Bolt credit to a whopping 21 aces, with a matchup between fifth seed Jordan Thompson and talented teen Brandon Nakashima still to come.
Three of the four seeds reigned supreme in Croatia, with just Italian eighth seed Gianluca Mager falling at the second stage to qualifier Daniel Altmaier in three sets. While Mager claimed the first, Altmaier worked hard to pull back control in the second to command momentum heading into a much tighter third set, eventually claiming the 4-6 6-1 7-5 result in an hour and 48 minutes. Second and third seed Serbians Dusan Lajovic and Filip Krajinovic both claimed wins, defeating Spaniard Bernarbe Zapata Miralles and Moldovan Radu Albot, respectively. Elsewhere, 18-year-old seventh seed Carlos Alcaraz downed Andrej Martin in 75 minutes flat, winning 60 per cent of the total points as he raced away to a 6-3 6-1 victory.
