Czech 20-year-old Jiri Lehecka caused the upset of the day at Rotterdam, ousting fifth seed Denis Shapovalov in two tight sets, 6-4 6-4. The top two seeds went through as planned, though Stefanos Tsitsipas needed three full sets to knock off Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, advancing to the second round after a 7-5 6-7 6-4 victory. Home nation talent Botic Van de Zandschup also advanced, whilst Lorenzo Musetti took down the in-form Swede, Mikael Ymer, and Karen Khachanov outlasted Australian Alexei Popyrin in a third set tiebreaker.

It was a day for qualifiers in the Dallas Open, with four qualifiers advancing through to the second round against higher ranked opposition. Jurij Rodionov caused the biggest upset with a three-set win over sixth seed United States representative Maxime Cressy, 7-6 4-6 6-1. Great Britain’s Liam Broady, Germany’s Cedrick-Marcel Stebe and Canada’s Vasek Pospisil all advanced through to the next round, while Australian Jordan Thompson and former Top 10 player Jack Sock also booked their spots in the round of 16.

Argentinian legend Juan Martin del Potro made his return from injury in his home nation after an interrupted few years, but it was not a sweet homecoming, knocked out comfortably by compatriot, sixth seed Federico Delbonis. Wildcard Sebastian Baez continued his great start to the season with a straight sets win over Danish teen, Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune, whilst four Spaniards – Jaume Munar, Pablo Andujar, Roberto Carballes Baena and Pedro Martinez – all got up. Seventh seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas must not have got the message, with the Cordoba Open winner bowing out at the first chance in Buenos Aires.

In the sole WTA Tour event, all three seeds on court got through with relative ease, as Maria Sakkari (first seed), Petra Kvitova (second) and Jelena Ostapenko (seventh) all reached the second round of play in St Petersburg. It was a great day for Romania as well, with all three representatives in Irina-Camelia Begu, Sorana Cirstea and Jaqueline Cristian winning. Other winners included young gun Kaja Juvan, Croatian Petra Martic and German Andrea Petkovic.
