Sydney Tennis Classic

Sydney’s semi-finalists largely went the way one would expect with three out of the four remaining competitors all seeds in the 500 event. The big upset of the day was Russian Daria Kasatkina taking down second seed Garbine Muguruza, opening the door for one of the remarkable in-form players from last season to jump up. Barbora Krejcikova and Anett Kontaveit – both of whom stunned the world with their 2021 seasons – face off in a semis after wins, with Kasatkina will face fifth seed Paula Badosa. In the men’s, top seed Aslan Karatsev survived a three-set battle against Lorenzo Sonego to now take on third seed Brit Daniel Evans, whilst compatriot Andy Murray had an easy day out against a retiring David Goffin to now lock horns with fourth seed Reilly Opelka.

In Adelaide, all eyes were on the Aussie duo of Thanasi Kokkinakis and Aleksandar Vukic. After the latter got the upper hand in the first set to win it in a tiebreaker, the former came back full of steam to win seven of the last nine games of the match to claim victory in a big way. He will nw take on the only remaining seed in the draw, fourth seed Croatian Maric Cilic who fought past Tommy Paul. It was a great day for French fans too, as Arthur Rinderknech dumped second seed Karen Khachanov out of the tournament, while qualifier Corentin Moutet continued his form to roll past Brazilian lucky loser Thiago Monteiro. In the women’s draw, Coco Gauff, Madison Keys and Alison Riske made it three from four Americans to advance, with Keys’ victory over eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova the big one.
