Sydney Tennis Classic
In the battle between two Top 10 talents, Paula Badosa held firm in a nail-biting third set tiebreak to defeat Barbora Krejcikova. The Spaniard won 6-3 4-6 7-6 with the deciding third set going all the way to 7-4. She piled on 12 aces to six and won 73.6 per cent of her first serve points compared to Krejcikova’s 62.3 per cent. Both players had their fair share of breaks, but in the end it all came down to the tiebreaker which saw the fifth seed salute. Meanwhile in the men’s final, top seed Aslan Karatsev ended the run of British wildcard Andy Murray to get up, 6-3 6-3. The match lasted an hour and 32 minutes, with the Russian winning 80 and 72 per cent of his first and second serve points, and saving all five break point opportunities. Meanwhile Murray was broken three times, and only hit 13 winners to Karatsev’s 27.

Hometown hero Thanasi Kokkinakis has completed the most remarkable of runs to start 2022, winning at home in the Adelaide International to claim his maiden ATP Tour title. He defeated Frenchman Arthur Rinderknecht in a massive three-setter 6-7 7-6 6-3 which lasted two hours and 38 minutes. Kokkinakis hit 38 winners to only 16 unforced errors, compared to Rinderknecht’s 39 and 25. He also broke twice, whilst the Frenchman was unable to break at all. In the women’s final, Madison Keys won the title in a dominant 66-minute rout over compatriot Alison Riske, triumphing 6-1 6-2 in the victory. Keys won 69 and 73.7 per cent of her points off her first and second serve points, then broke her opponent four times whilst not facing a break point in the one-sided victory.
