THE last remaining qualifiers earned spots in the 2020 Australian Open main draw with some big wins the final day of qualifying competition. For some, it will mean just a 48-hour rest until they begin again in the field of 128, while for others it is the end of the road after narrowly missing out on a first round spot.

In the men’s finals, number one seed Dennis Novak cruised through to the first round with a 7-6 6-2 victory over Hiroki Moriya. He was the only additional seed to advance on the final day after Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy went down to Egypt’s Mohamed Safwat in straight sets. Also through are the likes of Colombian Daniel Galan and Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor who have been regulars on the ATP Tour for many ears, while American Chris Eubanks took down Belgian Kimmer Commerjans who was considered one likely to make it. Other successful qualifiers were French duo Quentin Halys and Elliot Benchetrit, Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo, Argentina’s Marco Trungelliti and Spain’s Mario Vilella Martinez.

In the women’s finals, it was a different story for the seeds with six seeded players advancing, as well as former top 20 player Johanna Larsson of Sweden. Second seed Nao Hibino had no problems cruising through to the next round with a 6-1 6-2 victory, while 10th seed American Catherine McNally, 13th seed Belgian Greet Minnen and 19th seed Czech Barbora Krejcikova all won through in similar one-sided results. In fact, fifth seed Russian Anna Kalinskaya‘s three-set win over China’s Wang Xingu was the only match that needed a deciding set, with the Russian getting up in the end, 4-6 7-6 6-2. Other qualifiers through to the next round were 18th seed Slovenian Kaja Juvan, and unseeded trio, Elisabetta Cocciaretto, Leylah Fernandez and Antonia Lotter, with the latter knocking out Australia’s last remaining qualifying hope, Destanee Aiava 6-4 6-2.
