Australian Open: Women’s Day 9 review – Barty Party continues for first semi-finals berth in 36 years

DAY 9 of the Australian Open women’s draw saw the first two seeds head into the semifinals, with Australian Ash Barty and American Sofia Kenin reigning supreme over their respective opposition. This win sees both players head into their maiden Australian Open semi-finals – the first by an Australian at Melbourne Park in 36 years – with it doubling as Kenin’s first Grand Slam semi-final berth to date.

In the earlier fixture, 14th seed Kenin was clinical against her unseeded opposition, Tunisian Ons Jabeur, downing Jabeur in straight sets, 6-4 6-4. It was the unforced errors that really tell the story in this match, and while Jabeur ultimately leading majority of the other stats, including on the serve, Jabeur collected 20 more unforced errors than her American opponent with 36 to her name. Jabeur was stronger off the serve with five aces and winning off 72 per cent of her serve, but was riddled with errors off her second serve, only winning 10 of a possible 27 points compared to Kenin’s 64 per cent first and 55 per cent second serve. Kenin also hit only 14 winners and three double faults compared to Jabeur’s 34 and one, but the American was stronger on her service games and utilised every opportunity off Jabeur’s serve to stay one step ahead. Kenin will need to lift her game when she takes on first seed Australian, Barty in the next round.

Barty put up an impressive effort against seventh seed Petra Kvitova who forced Barty out at this stage of the Open in 2019. Barty was challenged early but breezed through the second set for the 7-6 6-2, getting her revenge and putting herself in good stead to keep pushing for top spot in the tournament. Barty was ultimately the cleaner player on the day, leading most of the stats including break points won (50 per cent compared to 17 per cent) and unforced errors (28 to 38), also winning points off 74 per cent of her first serve and hitting five aces. Kvitova hit eight more winners than Barty (28-20) but was well and truly outclassed by the Aussie who has the nation behind her on top of the consistency she has shown on court recently.
