NINTH seed Barbora Krejcikova was certainly made to work for her first round win at Roland Garros, but ultimately prevailed 4-6, 6-0, 7-6⁽³⁾ over Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo to progress to the second round.

In a match that lasted just under three hours, the Spaniard defied her world ranking of in the 80s for much of the match, really pushing the Wimbledon champion by breaking serve three times in the first set and saving seven of 10 break points in the second. However Krejcikova – who won her first singles match at Roland Garros since she won the French Open three years ago – ultimately showed why she is in the top 10 by proving to be too strong.

Although the Czech recorded 60 unforced errors, she did significantly better than her Spanish opponent in net points won and service winners.

Krejcikova’s next opponent will be China’s Xinyu Wang, who defeated German Tamara Korpatsch in straight sets.

Among the other winners in the Women’s Singles overnight was Greek Maria Sakkari, Dane Caroline Wozniacki and Americans Jessica Pegula, Danielle Collins and Coco Gauff, while the biggest upset of the day came from Colombian Camila Osorio, who defeated Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets.

Meanwhile in the only doubles match that got underway, Chinese Taipei pair Su-Wei Hsieh and Chia Yi Tsao did not have an easy time against Romanian pair Irina-Camelia Begu and Monica Niculescu, but ultimately prevailed 7-6, 7-5.
