Big names fall as some Aus Open campaigns barely get off ground

DAY 2 at the 2024 Australian Open saw a big day for the seeds in the women’s draw, with a number of them falling at the first hurdle.

The biggest of the seeds to fall was Czechia’s Marketa Vondrousova, with the number 7 seed and reigning Wimbledon champion falling to Ukrainian qualifier Dayana Yastremska in straight sets.

The big hitting Ukrainian was far too strong for Vondrousova, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

It was not a strong serving match for the Czech, serving seven double faults.

However, that does not take away from Yastremska, who dominated off the first serve, winning 71% compared to Vondrousova’s 44%.

Crucially for Yastremska she was also able to save half the break points she faced, whereas Vondrousova was only able to save one.

“In life I’m also pretty aggressive, same on court,” Yastremska said.

“Of course, I played like that since I was very small but I do enjoy to play like this.”

“I have a lot of mistakes as well but it’s fine. When you play aggressive, it’s normal.”

Vondrousova was not the only seed to fall yesterday, with Marie Bouzkova, Donna Vekic, Anhelina Kalinina, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Anastasia Potapova and Veronika Kudermetova all falling.

It was not a total disaster of a day for the seeds, with Elise Mertens, Ons Jabeur, Elina Svitolina, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Coco Gauff, Caroline Garcia and Jasmine Paolini all winning.
