Buenos Aires/New York ATP wrap: Aus Open quarter finalist out in first round at New York
AN Australian Open quarter finalist was bundled out in the first round of the New York Open, while an Argentinian had to battle hard on home soil to move through to the Round of 16 in the Argentina Open.
ARGENTINA OPEN – BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA:
In the only three-set match of the day and the last one to close out the first Round of 32 matches, Argentinian Federico Delbonis got up over Bolivian Hugo Dellien in just under three hours. Out on Court Guillermo Vilas, Delbonis came back from a disappointing first set to win 1-6 6-3 7-5. Dellien had a superior serving percentage with a 77 per cent efficiency and a 65 and 53 per cent success rate of his first and second serves. Aside from some early breaks – of which Dellien achieved four – Delbonis was able to grind out a win with four of his own in the last two sets and come away the stronger player despite winning less points. It was far from a complete performance for the Argentinian, but he got there in the end, eventually breaking in the eleventh game of the final set to win the decider 7-5.
In the other three games, eighth seed Norwegian Casper Ruud got through unscathed with a 6-2 6-3 win over Spaniard Pablo Andujar. Meanwhile, Jaume Munar joined his Spanish compatriot in exiting the tournament after going down to Brazilian, Thiago Monteiro 6-3 6-3. Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas got through to the Round of 16 in the last game, winning 6-4 6-4 over Italian, Lorenzo Sonego.

NEW YORK OPEN – NEW YORK, UNITED STATES:
Despite a quarter final giant-killing spree at the Australian Open, American Tennys Sandgren is out of the New York Open, bundled out by compatriot, Steve Johnson. The fifth seed American won the first set in a tiebreaker, but his 75th ranked opponent soon got on top to run out a three-set winner, 6-7 6-3 7-6. Johnson claimed the final set 7-3 in the tiebreaker after a see-sawing contest which lasted two hours and 20 minutes. Both players were superb on-serve with 82 and 80 per cent first serve points won respectively for Johnson and Sandgren, but it was Johnson who saved four of five break points, while breaking twice himself that helped him to the second set. It came down to a deciding tiebreaker but the 30-year-old American was more polished when it counted, standing up and bundling out his higher ranked opponent.
In other results, another all-American battle saw Marcos Giron defeat wildcard Jack Sock 6-3 6-4, while sixth seed Serbian, Miomir Kecmanovic downed American young gun Tommy Paul 6-4 6-2. In the other match, a third set tiebreaker had to separate Italy’s Andreas Seppi and Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumhur with the former triumphing 6-3 1-6 7-6. It was not until Seppi got to 8-6 in the tiebreaker that he finally could relax after two hours and seven minutes of action.
