Buenos Aires/New York wrap: 2019 finalist out in New York as Argentinians push seeds

A COUPLE of seeds had to overcome fights from Argentinian wildcards in Buenos Aires, while last year’s New York Open runner-up is out after losing in the first round.

ARGENTINA OPEN – BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA:

Seventh seed Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas has held off determined Argentinian, Leonardo Mayer in a come-from-behind win. Ramos-Vinolas took two hours and 14 minutes to finally get the victory, downing his opponent 4-6 6-3 7-5. He only served the three aces to Mayer’s nine, but was more consistent on serve with a 77 per cent first serve points record, and an impressive 63 per cent winning record on his second serve. He also broke twice and won 48 per cent of Mayer’s second serve points. He moved into the second round where he will play Urguay’s Pablo Cuevas.

In other results, sixth seed, Laslo Djere got past Argentinian wildcard, Francisco Cerundolo in equally tough circumstances, winning 6-2 2-6 6-4, to face Juan Ignacio Londero in the Round of 16 after he toppled Slovenia’s Filip Horansky. Also into the Round of 16 was Slovenia’s Josef Kovalik and lucky loser, Pedro Sousa who now go head-to-head. Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena downed Italian Marco Cecchinato, while Spanish qualifier, Pedro Martinez and Argentinian qualifier, Facundo Bagnis also advanced.

NEW YORK OPEN – NEW YORK, UNITED STATES:

Last year’s runner-up is out of the New York Open with Canadian wildcard Brayden Schnur‘s tournament over before it really began. He was ousted by 94th ranked German, Dominik Koepfer with the 25-year-old getting up in a straightforward 6-4 6-3 victory to move onto the Round of 16. The match lasted an hour and 17 minutes, with Koepfer breaking five times to three and winning a strong 66 and 58 per cent of his first and second serve points respectively. Meanwhile his opponent claimed just 56 and 33 per cent of his first and second serve points, but could only manage a serving efficiency of 62 per cent. Overall, Koepfer was the cleaner of the pair, winning 64 per cent of his service points and 52 per cent of his return points, and booked a Round of 16 date with Brit, Kyle Edmund.

The eighth seed downed Japan’s Yasutaka Uchiyama, 7-5 6-4 joining compatriot Cameron Norrie in the Round of 16. Australia’s Jordan Thompson managed to weather the serving storm against 40-year-old Croatian, Ivo Karlovic in a straight sets win, while Kevin Anderson also got up with a victory over Chinese Taipei qualifier, Jason Jung. In other results, Soonwoo Kwon had to fight hard to knock off Go Soeda who had made it through qualifying, while Yoshihito Nishioka was the last Japanese player standing following his three-set win over Switzerland’s Henri Laaksonen. Finally, Italian qualifier Paolo Lorenzi also moved through to the Round of 16, courtesy of a three-set win over fellow qualifier, Serbia’s Danilo Petrovic.
