Chile Open: Garin forced to retire as Ruud, Ramos-Vinolas cruise through to semis
THE top seed, tournament favourite and hometown hero, Cristian Garin is out of the Chile Open after he was forced to retire due to injury against Brazilian wildcard, Thiago Seyboth Wild in the quarter finals. Seyboth Wild won the first set in a tiebreaker with Garin clearly not himself, and eventually he had to call it quits after a set due to back pain. It handed the wildcard a spot in the final four to face another surprise semi-finalist in Argentinian qualifier, Renzo Olivo.
Olivo knocked out sixth seed Hugo Dellien in a come-from-behind three set win right after doing the same to fourth seed Uruguayan, Pablo Cuevas in the Round of 16. It took almost three hours, but Olivo produced a remarkable comeback to win 3-6 7-6 7-5 against the Bolivian and make his way through to the next round. Similar to his match against Cuevas, Olivo was not the more dominant server, but stepped up when it counted in the final two sets to win the second set tiebreaker, 7-5 and then win the deciding set 7-5. Dellien was more consistent across the board with his serve – and even won four more total points – but a crucial break at the end of the deciding set cost the higher ranked player in the match.
In the other two quarter finals, second seed Norwegian Casper Ruud continued his quest to win his second clay title this season, defeating seventh seed Argentinian, Federico Delbonis 7-5 7-5. Ruud will now face third seed, Albert Ramos-Vinolas who knocked off eighth seed Thiago Monteiro 6-4 6-4 in another competitive match.
