Davis Cup Finals – Quarter Finals: Russia upsets Serbia with nail-biting doubles win

CANADA, Russia, Great Britain and Spain have advanced through to the Davis Cup semi-finals after quarter finals wins over the last 24 hours. The Canadians booked their spot a day early thanks to a triumph over Australia, while the other three nations progressed through to the next stage a few hours ago to guarantee their spot in the final four.

CANADA 2 defeated AUSTRALIA 1

Vasek Pospisil (CAN) defeated John Millman (AUS) 7-6 6-4
Alex de Minaur (AUS) defeated Denis Shapovalov (CAN( 3-6 6-3 7-5
V. Pospisil/D. Shapovalov (CAN) defeated J. Peers/J. Thompson (AUS) 6-4 6-4

Much like the group stage, Canada became the first nation through to the semi-finals after downing Australia over three matches. Vasek Pospisil‘s terrific form continued with a straight sets win over John Millman who played his first match of the tournament, replacing the sore Nick Kyrgios. Alex de Minaur levelled proceedings for the Aussies with a come-from-behind win over Denis Shapovalov, but then the Canadian pair held firm in the doubles, winning 6-4 6-4, including coming back from 0-4 down in the second set to stop the deciding rubber going to three sets.

RUSSIA 2 defeated SERBIA 1

Andrey Rublev (RUS) defeated Filip Krajinovic (SRB) 6-2 6-1
Novak Djokovic (SRB) defeated Karen Khachanov (RUS) 6-3 6-3
K. Khachanov/A. Rublev (RUS) defeated N. Djokovic/V. Troicki (SRB) 6-4 4-6 7-6

Russia was able to overcome the influence of world number two, Novak Djokovic to move through to the semi-finals for a clash with Canada. The Russians earned a spot in the quarters after finishing second in their group behind Spain, but made the most of their chances in this clash with Andrey Rublev smashing Filip Krajinovic 6-2 6-1. Unfortunately for his Russian teammate, Karen Khachanov received a similar beat down from Djokovic who cruised through 6-3 6-3. Sensing the importance of winning the doubles, Serbia opted to include Djokovic in the doubles, and while he produced some big winners and was the clear standout on the court, he and Viktor Troicki fell short in a third set tiebreaker to be eliminated from the competition.

GREAT BRITAIN 2 defeated GERMANY 0

Kyle Edmund (GBR) defeated Philipp Kohlscreiber (GER) 6-3 7-5
Daniel Evans (GBR) defeated Jan-Lennard Struff (GER) 7-6 3-6 7-6

Great Britain has manoeuvred its way into the semi-finals whilst keeping Andy Murray fresh, with a couple of wins to lock up a date with Spain. Kyle Edmund defeated Philipp Kohlscreiber, 6-3 7-5 to put the Germans on the back foot early, before Daniel Evans secured the overall victory with a 7-6 3-6 7-6 epic thriller in the singles against Jan-Lennard Struff. With the result ultimately decided thanks to Great Britain’s two wins, there was no need to play a doubles given it was effectively a dead rubber. It also allowed Great Britain a chance to have a slightly earlier break than their Spanish opponents.

SPAIN 2 defeated ARGENTINA 1

Guido Pella (ARG) defeated Pablo Carreno Busta (ESP) 6-7 7-6 6-1
Rafael Nadal (ESP) defeated Diego Schwartzman (ARG) 6-1 6-2
M. Granollers/R. Nadal (ESP) defeated M. Gonzalez/L. Mayer (ARG) 6-4 4-6 6-3

Spain has advanced through to the semi-finals after securing a 2-1 win over Argentina in the last quarter finals tie. Guido Pella upset the home crowd with a big three sets win over Pablo Carreno Busta which included two tiebreakers before a comfortable 6-1 third set. World number one, Rafael Nadal got the crowd back on its feet again thanks to a quick obliteration of Diego Schwartzman to send the overall tie into a deciding doubles rubber. Nadal’s inclusion in the doubles showed how much a win meant to Spain pairing with Marcel Granollers to defeat their Argentinian opponents. After a slight hiccup in the second set the Spanish duo upped the ante in the third to seal the deal and move through to the next stage with a 6-3 win.
