Diego’s last dance not done just yet

RETIRING former Top 10 talent Diego Schwartzman came out at Buenos Aires ATP250 event playing in his home nation’s capital for the last time invited family and friends to celebrate his last ATP Tour match. Except there was a hitch, he won the match.

The world number 386 had not won an ATP Tour match since Tokyo in September 2023, so with almost 18 months between drinks, and coming up against seventh seed and Top 40 player Nicolas Jarry, no one, not even Schwartzman himself, expected to win.

“I expected to lose, if I’m honest,” Schwartzman said. “After many months without playing, I played last week in Rosario [Challenger], and I played great tennis against the [eventual] champion Camilo Ugo Carabelli. I didn’t expect to win [against Jarry]. I played a great match, I made good points, he was playing a little nervous, and I took the chances in the third. I was expecting to cry a little after the match and be ready for emotion, but not for the win.”

It might have been a strange emotion for the Argentinian who won the title back in 2021, so now the man who has accrued more than $14 million USD wanted to wrap up his career at his self-proclaimed favourite tournament.

Schwartzman is not known for his serving or power, but instead his court coverage and IQ, which he used to his advantage when Jarry tightened up and hit a plethora of unforced errors through the 7-6 4-6 6-3 match. Handed a wildcard at the event for his last dance, Schwartzman took two hours and 56 minutes to grind past the world number 40 on the Argentinian clay.

He only hit 15 winners for the match compared to the Chilean’s 43, but also committed half the amount of unforced errors as Jarry hit a ridiculous 81 to essentially hand the game to the 32-year-old. A whopping 28cm stands between the two opponents with the 198cm Jarry only able to break Schwartzman twice, the same amount that the Argentinian achieved the other way.

But standing up when it counted, Schwartzman managed to kick off his farewell tournament with an incredible upset win in the first round. He takes on Spaniard Pedro Martinez in the Round of 16 after Martinez had to finish off his Round of 32 match against Damir Dzumhur over two days. That contest was delicately poised at 6-6 in the deciding third set after a topsy-turvy first two sets of 0-6 6-2 between the duo.

In other first round results, Brazilian wunderkind Joao Fonseca outplayed eighth seed Tomas Etcheverry, while Corentin Moutet and Federico Coria also advanced to the next round. From the Round of 16 results completed world number two Alexander Zverev won against Serbian Dusan Lajovic 6-4 6-4, while another Serbian in Laslo Djere made it a day to forget for Chilean fans in a three-set victory over Alejandro Tabilo.

The Cerundolo family would have had mixed emotions seeing fifth seed Francisco topple qualifier and brother Juan Manuel 6-2 6-3, while Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild upset Argentinian sixth seed Sebastian Baez in straight sets, 6-3 6-4.
