Korda keeps dream alive with nail-biting win

AMERICAN talent Sebastian Korda has survived a nail-biting five-set clash to overcome world number 100 Corentin Moutet earlier today. With father, coach and Australian Open winner Petr watching on, Korda broke in the 10th game of the fourth set when Moutet was serving for the match. From there, he won the next three games to take the fourth set and eventually win, 3-6 6-4 6-7 7-5 7-6.

The match lasted a whopping four hours and 47 minutes, with Korda having his own match points in the fifth set at 6-5, before Moutet saved them to win the game and force a super tiebreak. At the Australian Open, the fifth set first-to-10 tiebreaker replaced the advantage win by two games rule, and on this occasion, Korda won 10-6. The victory backed up Korda’s upset win over 12th seed Cameron Norrie in the first round.

Neither player particularly dominated consistently on serve, though were handy, with Korda producing a higher efficiency (73 to 68 per cent), but Moutet had a higher first serve success rate (75 to 65 per cent). Both players brought up a ton of break point opportunities with Korda breaking five times from 16 points, while Moutet broke five times from 23 points. Korda shaded his opponent in winners (67-61) but also had a whopping 92 unforced errors to 58.

Korda’s win saw him move throuhh to the Round of 32, where he will take on 19th seed Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta. The Spaniard had his own five-set battle to defeat Tallon Griekspoor. In the end, Carreno Busta won 6-3 6-7 7-6 3-6 6-4 in a tiring match.

The biggest upset of the day came when French warrior Adrian Mannarino put away 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets. Mannarino won 6-4 6-2 6-3 to advance through to the third round and opening up the eighth of the draw.

In other results, 14th seed Canadian Denis Shapovalov had to battle past Soonwoo Kwon, coming back from two sets to one down to win, 7-6 6-7 6-7 7-5 6-2. The most anticipated third round clash for Friday will be Spanish young gun Carlos Alcaraz up against sixth seed Italian Matteo Berrettini.
