Kudermetova, Sabalenka come from behind to post impressive wins in Ostrava

VERONIKA Kudermetova and Aryna Sabalenka are through to the quarter finals of the Ostrava Open after claiming come-from-behind victories. Kudermetova toppled second seed Karolina Pliskova – who slumped to a 10-7 record since winning in Brisbane earlier this year – as the world number 47 got up 4-6 6-4 6-3 in an hour and 56 minutes.

The Russian talent served up one more ace than her opponent (10-9) and had a much higher serving efficiency (64 to 59 per cent) and most importantly first serve points winning record (78 per cent) as she went on to break five times from seven chances whilst only being broken the four times from 10 opportunities. In the end the Russian was just more consistent for longer, particularly in the last two sets. It was not the first time this year Kudermetova has beaten the world number six who has slipped down the rankings, winning back in August at the Western & Southern Open.

“This is the second time we’ve played this year and I beat her twice, so I think it was a good match from me,” Kudermetova said post-match. “I tried to hit every ball, use my serve, and stayed calm after losing the first set. “I was more focused. I may have rushed too much in the first set, but after that, I tried to think what I needed to do and what I could expect. I think that was the key to the match.”

It was not the only come-from-behind win, as Belarusian talent Sabalenka managed to come from a set down to level her head-to-head record with 16-year-old American Coco Gauff. Dropping the first set 6-1, Sabalenka fought back to claim victory 1-6 7-5 7-6 in two hours and 14 minutes. After not facing a break point in the first set and breaking her opponent twice, Gauff was dominating proceedings. She dropped just six points on serve and 14 points total for the first set. After that Sabalenka levelled the score as she managed to grab a critical late break, getting her usually-reliable serve going.
Winning 67 and 70 per cent off her first and second serve from a 73 per cent efficiency, Sabalenka claimed the second set in a grind, and then despite her serve going missing in the second set – two aces, five double faults and a 56 per cent efficiency – she managed to somehow capitalise off Gauff’s serve. The American had an elite 81 per cent efficiency, but could only scramble together 48 per cent of her first serve points and only one of serve points off her second. She still broke three times from five chances, but Sabalenka took all of her three break point opportunities to force a tiebreaker and then win 7-2 in the tiebreaker to move through to the next round.
The other three results were fairly standard though not without some quality underrated opponents. Seventh seed Elise Mertens moved through by defeating another Czech opponent in Karolina Muchova, 6-4 6-2 to book a spot in the quarter finals. Meanwhile Tunisian talent Ons Jabeur‘s strong 2020 season continued with a crunch 6-4 6-4 victory over Latvian wildcard, Jelena Ostapenko 6-4 6-4. In the late game, Jennifer Brady won through against Russia’s Daria Kasatkina 7-5 6-2 to secure the last quarter finals spot.
Tomorrow’s quarter finals sees Jabeur with the quick turnaround to face Greece’s Maria Sakkari first up in the afternoon followed by the only all-seeded battle of Victoria Azarenka and Mertens. In the night session, Brady locks horns with Kudermetova before Sabalenka takes on Spanish qualifier Sara Sorribes Tormo for the final spot in the semi-finals.
