Lucky local laps up second chance
AUSSIE Rinky Hijikata made the most of his lucky loser second chance at the Adelaide International after defeating veteran David Goffin yesterday in straight sets.
After losing in the final round of qualifying Hijikata was catapulted into the main draw as a lucky loser after an injury withdrawal and went on to defeat the Belgian in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
Although Hijikata served more double faults than Goffin, his first serve percentage and first serve points won percentage were both still better than the Belgian’s. Hijikata also saved and converted a higher percentage of break points than Goffin did.
“It wasn’t easy. David’s been around for a long time, he’s a classy player,” Hijikata said, reflecting on the match.
“He actually diced me up late last year so I knew it was going to be very tough but yeah, I’m happy to get one back on him.
“When you get a lucky loser in, you pretty much have nothing to lose. I felt like I was playing with house money out here.”
Hijikata’s next opponent is Brandon Nakashima, after the American beat qualifier Yannick Hanfmann yesterday.
It was a good day for lucky losers yesterday with fellow lucky loser Manuel Guinard also winning his match.
It was a mixed day for the seeds though, with Nakashima and Tomas Etcheverry winning, but Alexander Bublik was upset by Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets.
