Lyon Open: Dodin grabs two-for-one deal in Lyon
FRENCHWOMAN Oceane Dodin might have been one of only four players to play her first round match on the third day of competition and the only one set to play two matches back-to-back on the same day, but a stroke of luck helped her in Lyon. Sixth seed Swiss talent, Jil Teichmann was forced to retire prior to their Round of 16 match, which was fortunate considering Dodin was set to face her straight after her win over Mandy Minella 6-4 6-4.
With the order of play set for the games to be played on the day, the retirement of Teichmann meant Dodin moved through to the quarter finals off the back of an hour and 35 minutes. She defeated Minella in straight sets – not without a challenge – but now takes on the winner of number one seed, Sofia Kenin and Romanian, Jaqueline Cristian in the last eight. Kenin booked her spot in the quarter finals with a win over her own, defeating Russian Vitalia Diatchenko in the other Round of 32 match.
Also through to the quarter finals were third seed, Caroline Garcia and fifth seed, Alison Van Uytvanck who now face off in the final eight. Italian Camila Giorgi also booked her spot in the quarter finals with an upset come-from-behind win over fourth seed Frenchwoman, Alize Cornet 4-6 7-6 6-2. Giorgi will take on one of seventh seed Russian, Daria Kasatkina or Romanian, Irina Baru in that match.
