SECOND seed, Kristina Mladenovic has downed compatriot, Chloe Paquet in three sets, escaping a first set scare to come from behind and book a spot in the Round of 16 at Lyon.

Mladenovic took two hours and 12 minutes to overcome the world number 166, but the 42nd ranked Frenchwoman got there in the end, 1-6 6-2 6-4. Mladenovic would definitely like to have that first set again, serving seven double faults in a disappointing display, but rebounded to only serve seven more over the next two sets. Overall Mladenovic ended up with the 14, and only four aces, but won 65.5 per cent of her first serve points and broke seven times to six during the match. Her second serve points were a concern, winning only 25.7 per cent of points off it, but she was impressive off both of Paquet’s first and second serves, particularly after the first set, winning 53.6 per cent off the return in total.

Three other seeds progressed through to the Round of 16 to make it a perfect start to the tournament thus far, with only eighth seed Slovakian, Viktoria Kuzmova having to battle over three sets before winning 6-2 2-6 6-2 over Dutchwoman, Lesley Pattinama Kerkhov. Sixth seed, Jil Teichmann and seventh seed Daria Kasatkina both moved through unscathed with straight sets wins, as did Frenchwoman, Camila Giorgi. In a couple of unseeded clashes, Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova and Czech Tereza Martincova both won through in three sets, downing Pole, Magdalena Frech and Romanian Ana Bogdan respectively.
