Monterrey Open: Fernandez ousts Stephens to keep rise rolling

CANADIAN teenager, Leylah Fernandez has come from behind to knock out fifth seed, Sloane Stephens 6-7 6-3 6-3 and move into the quarter finals at Monterrey. Fresh off a finals appearance in Mexico, Fernandez fought her way to a win in two hours and five minutes.

Her serve was consistent, running at a 69 per cent efficiency whilst winning 73.3 and 70.4 per cent of her first and second serve points respectively. She broke four times to one during the match and won 37.6 per cent off the return. In particular, she won 56.7 per cent of Stephens’ second serve points which helped her claim the match. She came close to winning the first set but lost the tiebreaker 7-4 then bounced back over the next two sets to claim the match with a couple of extra breaks. Fernandez now plays the winner of number one seed, Elina Svitolina and Belarusian, Olga Govortsova in the quarter finals.

In other Round of 16 results, eighth seed Wang Yafan had to overcome an early battle from Australian Astra Sharma before winning in three sets in just under three hours, 7-6 4-6 6-3. Meanwhile sixth seed Rebecca Peterson moved through to the final eight with a win over Ukrainian, Kateryna Bondarenko 7-6 7-5, while ninth seed Czech, Marie Bouzkova also moved through with a 6-4 6-1 win in an hour and 22 minutes.
