SIXTH seed Swede, Rebecca Peterson has survived a two-and-a-half hour battle with Ukrainian, Kateryna Kozlova to move through to the Round of 16 at Monterrey.

Peterson led the procession of seeds through on the opening day, but it was not without a challenge, losing the first set 6-3 before bounding back to win 3-6 7-6 6-4. Peterson served up four aces and won 59.4 per cent of her first serve points, marginally ahead of Kozlova, though her second serve points were slightly below at just 50 per cent success rate. Both players had plenty of break point opportunities, with Peterson mustering up 10 chances and converting six, while Kozlova actually broke seven times, but the extra one came in the first set. Kozolova actually had higher winning percentages on both her service and return points, but the players could not be split overall, winning exactly 96 points apiece.

In other results, eighth seed Wang Yafan moved through to the Round of 16 with a victory over Spaniard, Lara Arruabarrena 6-4 6-4, while ninth seed Marie Bouzkova also took up a place in the next round with a 6-4 6-2 win over Kristina Kucova 6-4 6-2. Astra Sharma won 6-4 6-4 over Serbian Nina Stojanovic, with the Australian moving through to the next round much like Belarusian, Olga Govortsova who won from a set down against Caroline Dolehide, 3-6 6-2 6-1. In the night games, Slovakia’s Anna Schiedlova came from behind to topple Venus Williams 4-6 6-3 6-2 in two and a half hours, while another Grand Slam winner, Sloane Stephens had better luck with her first win of 2020 over compatriot, Emma Navarro.
