NUMBER one seed at Monterrey, Elina Svitolina has needed just 50 minutes to dismantle Arantxa Rus 6-0 6-1 to reach the final of the Open. The Ukrainian was far too strong for the Dutch player, booking a spot in the decider against Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova.

The Czech got up with an upset win over Johanna Konta who was favoured to moved through and ensure the only two top 20 players made it to the last day. But instead, it was Bouzkova who caused the upset – having already knocked out eighth seed, Wang Yafan the day before in straight sets – defeating the Brit, 6-3 6-4. Konta had only just escaped past Russian, Anastasia Potapova in the quarter finals, whilst Svitolina had worked hard for a straight sets win over Canadian up-and-comer Leylah Fernandez.

In the 50-minute rout, Svitolina won 68.7 per cent of points, including only dropping nine points on her serve and breaking Rus five times during the contest. The Dutchwoman did not even bring up a break point opportunity, and whilst she was able to be efficient on serve (78.3 per cent), she won just 39.9 and 30 per cent off her first and second serve points respectively.

Meanwhile in the other semi-final, Bouzkova took an hour and 41 minutes to see off Konta in straight sets, winning 76.7 per cent of her first serve points and saving all five break point opportunities for her opponent. At the same time, the Czech broke two times from five chances and was able to control the match through her consistent serve to book a spot in the decider. The 21-year-old has now moved up 10 spots inside the top 50 to number 47 in the world.
