AUSSIE Alexei Popyrin spiced up the men’s singles draw at the 2024 Olympics after he upset Chilean 16th seed Nicolas Jarry 6-3, 7-6⁽⁵⁾ .

Popyrin blitzed his more fancied opponent in the first set in 36 minutes, before being made to work for the set win in the second term, taking just under an hour.

Popyrin recorded double the number of aces that Jarry did, but also recorded two more double faults than the Chilean. Both players had poor first serves, but improved on their second serves.

One of the stats that was very telling was the errors, with Jarry recording significantly more forced errors (41-27) and unforced errors (16-8).

Popyrin’s next opponent will be Stan Wawrinka, after the Swiss veteran defeated Pavel Kotov in straight sets.

Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud also had big wins overnight, with the former now setting up a second round match with world number two Novak Djokovic.

Meanwhile it was also a good day for Australia in the men’s doubles, with Matthew Ebden and John Peers defeating Lebanese pair Hady Habib and Benjamin Hassan. After a hard fought first set, the Aussie pair had a much easier time in the second set to wrap up the straight set win in just over an hour. They will now play Spanish pair Pablo Carreno Busta and Marcel Granollers, who defeated Italian top seeds Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.
