The first tournament kicking off the new year begins on January 1 with the ATP Cup. The ATP Tour players not associated with that, will have the choice of ATP 250 events in Melbourne and Adelaide, as well as Challenger Tour events at ATP 80 level in regional cities, Bendigo and Traralgon. The second week will see a second Adelaide International event (largely comprised of players from the first one), with Sydney the other alternative for those coming from the ATP Cup, or arriving in Australia for the second week of action.
The women’s calendar is largely the same minus the Challenger events, instead focusing on higher ranked WTA Tour tournaments. There are two WTA 500 events in the calendar, starting with Adelaide on January 3, and then Sydney a week later. They are surrounded by 250 events, including two simultaneous WTA 250 events in Melbourne – akin to last year – and then one in Adelaide following the 250 event. It builds up to the 2022 Australian Open which will be held in the last two weeks of January.
Other events
Alongside the two calendars, Tennis Australia also announced that the Victorian Wheelchair Open and Melbourne Wheelchair Open would take place in January. The Victorian Wheelchair Open will run from January 8-12, and the Melbourne Wheelchair Open will run from January 15-19. These will culminate in the 2022 Australian Open Wheelchair Championships from January 23-27.
On the junior circuit, the famous Traralgon Juniors event – an ITF J1, the highest of the events outside Grand Slams – will remain on the calendar. That will run from January 14-19, leading up to the 2022 Australian Open Junior Championships which takes place from January 22-29.
