Thailand Open: Swiss qualifier to face Polish seed in final

SWISS qualifier, 19-year-old Leonie Kung will take on fifth seed, Magna Linette of Poland after the duo won through to the final of the Thailand Open courtesy of a couple of impressive wins.

The fifth seed Pole got home relatively straight forward with a 7-5 6-4 victory over Romanian Patricia Tig. The match lasted 94 minutes and Linette broke five times to three, while recording an impressive 71.4 per cent first serve points winning ratio. She also won 61.5 per cent of Tig’s second serves and 49.3 per cent of her overall return points in a solid display. Heading into the final as favourite, Linette will be keen to improve her own second set, winning just 40 per cent off it.

The other semi-final was more remarkable with Swiss teenager, Kung continuing her run at the Thailand Open to reach the semi-finals. Facing eighth seed Nao Hibino of Japan, Kung managed to get the upper hand in a third and deciding set in a match that took two and a half hours. Winning the first set 7-5, Kung had to fight back after Hibino levelled the scores by winning the second set. A crucial break in the final set allowed Kung to remain ahead and book a spot in the Hua Hin final. Kung won 62.5 per cent of her first serve points and broke seven times to six overall, while taking advantage of Hibino’s serve, winning more than half of her return points.
