FELIX Auger-Aliassime booked his ticket to Round 4 of the US Open with a dominant 6-1 6-0 6-4 victory over Corentin Moutet. The Canadian has had an outstanding tournament so far, having only dropped one set across his three matches to date. Moutet came into this match with confidence after a strong win against 23rd seed Daniel Evans in the second round, but he was unable to back-up that performance in this one. Auger-Aliassime’s intensity never wavered throughout the contest, as he hit 34 winners for the day and regularly used his powerful serve to claim easy points. Moutet did break serve once early in the third set, but the 15th seed responded by immediately breaking back and closed it out in just under two hours. This is Auger-Aliassime’s first ever Round 4 berth at a Grand Slam. The result sets up a mouth-watering blockbuster between Auger-Aliassime and second seed Domenic Thiem, who took care of 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic 6-2 6-2 3-6 6-3.
Australian 21st seed Alex de Minaur rallied from two sets to one down to defeat Russian 11th seed Karen Khachanov 6-4 0-6 4-6 6-3 6-1. Despite having a disastrous second set and consequent meltdown, the youngster was able to get his game back under control and apply constant pressure to his opponent. De Minaur’s fantastic fitness level gives him an edge the longer any match goes on, and he used that to his advantage in this one by running over the top of Khachanov at the end. The victory means de Minaur and fellow Australian Jordan Thompson are the first Aussie male pair to reach the US Open round of 16 since Lleyton Hewitt and Pat Rafter in 2001, the year Hewitt won his first Grand Slam title.
De Minaur’s next opponent will be the in-form Vasek Pospisil, who also came back from two sets to one down to get his victory. He did this against 8th seed Roberto Bautista Agut, serving 19 aces hitting 71 winners to take it out 7-5 2-6 4-6 6-3 6-2. This is Pospisil’s second straight win over a high-ranked opponent, as he defeated Western and Southern Open runner up Milos Raonic in the second round. He is a dangerous player that likes to dictate his opponent with his powerful shot-making, so De Minaur will have his hands full when attempting to reach the final eight.
In other results, Frances Tiafoe breezed past Marton Fucsovics 6-2 6-3 6-2 and third seed Daniil Medvedev defeated J.J Wolf 6-3 6-3 6-2. Medvedev hit 13 aces, won 80 per cent of points on his first serve and converted 70 per cent of break point opportunities in the contest. Wolf should be proud of his debut Grand Slam performance though, as reaching the third round is a great achievement and Medvedev was always going to prove very difficult to beat.
Italian 6th seed Matteo Berrettini hit 40 winners on his way to a 6-4 6-4 6-2 win over Casper Ruud. He will face Russian 10th seed Andrey Rublev in the fourth round, who defeated Italian Salvatore Caruso 6-0 6-4 6-0. Neither Betterini nor Rublev have lost a set in the tournament so far, so this will be a fascinating clash to watch.
