Thiem hungrier than the Wolf

AUSTRIAN Dominic Thiem showed he was able to outlast American wildcard J.J. Wolf in a three-set epic in the opening round at Winston-Salem. In what will be the Austrian’s final tuneup before the US Open – his first and only Grand Slam title came from Flushing Meadows – Thiem knocked off Wolf 6-7 7-5 7-6 in three hours and 10 minutes.

The match, which saw two tiebreakers, a lengthy rain delay in the third set and an incredible back and forth between the pair, resulted in the Austrian star winning his first hard-court since March 2021. Advancing through to the Round of 32 to face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov who is the top seed at the ATP 250 event.

“First of all I’m super happy to get that win, [my] first win on hard courts since a very long time, since March ’21, I guess,” Thiem said post-match.

“It was not easy at all today with the rain delay, coming back out there at 11:15 p.m. It was very late. I had trouble [getting] into the match again,” Thiem said. “But luckily I raised the level a little bit in the third-set tie-break and compared to Kitzbühel, where similar stuff happened with the rain, the luck was on my side today.”

Thiem was the biggest name competing at the Winston-Salem event, with Fabio Fognini the other former Top 10 talent, taking out Croatian Dusan Lajovic. In other results, Thiago Monteiro became the first player through to the Round of 16 via a straight sets win over sixth seed Georgian Nikolaz Basilashvili, 6-4 6-1, while James Duckworth won the all-Australian clash with Thanasi Kokkinakis in three sets.
