Wildcard Thiago Seyboth Wild defeats Casper Ruud in Chile Open final for maiden ATP title
SECOND seed Norwegian Casper Ruud fell to wildcard Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild in the Chile Open final, going down to the 19-year-old, 7-5 4-6 6-3 in a whopping two hours and 16 minutes. This victory is Seyboth Wild’s maiden ATP title, making him the youngest player to win the Chile Open title since Rafael Nadal in 2005 at age 18.
Winning the first set tiebreaker, Seyboth Wild looked well on his way to collecting victory before a strong second set from Ruud proved his second seed position to collect the second set and put himself in good stead for a third set. But Seyboth Wild was not going to give up, eventually regaining control and running away with the third set.
Seyboth Wild won the match with his stellar serve, collecting 17 aces and only three double faults to run home victor, winning points off 71 per cent of his first serve (45/63), but interestingly a lower percentage than his 38-ranked opponent who won off 72 per cent (31/43). Seyboth Wild also saved eight of 11 break points at 73 per cent compared to Ruud’s 43 per cent.
Seyboth Wild also defeated fifth seed Juan Ignacio Londero and first seed Cristian Garin (who retired midway through the third round match) to make it to the final. He is now the youngest Brazilian player to ever win an ATP title.
