World Tennis Tournament: Monfils wins through to the final to face Auger-Aliassime

REIGNING champion, Gael Monfils will contest the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament final after booking a spot with a semi-finals win. He will face teenage sensation, Felix Auger-Aliassime for the title.

Auger-Aliassime has found the form that saw him skyrocket into the top 30 last year, defeating Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets to reach the final of the World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam. The 19-year-old served 16 aces and won a remarkable 94 per cent of his first serve points – dropping just three points for the match off his first serve – while saving all four break point opportunities for the Spaniard. The Canadian broke once from five times, but it was enough to win the second set and avoid a potential third decider. Auger-Aliassime won the first tiebreak 7-2 and while the match took almost two hours, the youngster booked a spot in the final after his best performance of the year.

Monfils has barely broken a sweat on his way to the final at Rotterdam, and while he was challenged by Serbian Filip Krajinovic, the Frenchman and reigning champ was too strong. Monfils won 6-4 7-6, triumphing 7-5 in the second set tiebreaker to earn a spot in the final to try and defend his success from 2019. The match lasted an hour and 45 minutes, with Monfils serving at an elite 77 per cent efficiency, then won 78 per cent of his first serve points. He broke twice – though had nine chances – while Krajinovic only had the one chance but made it count. His work off the return was really solid, winning 40 per cent of his receiving points, while a far superior 72 per cent on serve.

SEMI-FINALS RESULTS:

[3] Gael Monfils (FRA) defeated Filip Krajinovic (SRB) 6-4 7-6
Felix Auger-Aliassime (CAN) defeated Pablo Carreno Busta (ESP) 7-6 6-4
