WTA Fantasy Tennis Rankings post Miami Open: Osaka moves into top five as Hsieh, Kontaveit slide

IN an update to our fantasy tennis competition, we have adjusted the WTA Tour rankings accordingly following the conclusion of Miami Open. We will update both the ATP and WTA Tours once major tournaments are completed and name the key bolters and sliders since the last update.

BOLTERS:

Naomi Osaka +5 (#10 to #5)

After last year’s number one seed bowed out to Su Wei Hsieh in the third round, it was always likely that the dual Grand Slam winner was going to make up points a year later. That said, Osaka went the full way and took out the tournament, boosting her ranking to fifth in the world and leaping past a number of her contemporaries in the process. She is now within striking distance of fourth, with the top three still comfortably in front.

Magda Linette +7 (#35 to #28)

The bolter of the tournament, Linette claimed some big scalps over the journey, including Belinda Bencic and Anett Kontaveit. There was no shame losing to world number one, Ash Barty in the quarter finals, and now the Pole has thrust herself into a seeding position for the major tournaments on clay. If she can continue this form, a potential top 20 spot could be on offer by the time the majors roll around.

Anastasia Potapova +10 (#79 to #69)

The Russian talent earned a nice boost from her third round appearance at Miami. It might not seem like much, but when the majority of those around her are dropping out in the first two rounds, an extra 30 ranking points – with no points to defend – can go a long way and she moved up the 10 spots, more than anyone else on tour this week. As one of the players who could really improve this year, Potapova would hope she can work her way into the top 50 by year’s end.

SLIDERS:

Su Wei Hsieh -20 (#55 to #75)

After a quarter finals appearance 12 months ago in a run that included knocking off number one seed Osaka, Hsieh did not have the same luck this year unseeded, with the world number 55 bundled out in the second round – ironically by Osaka. It caused her to drop 180 points and slip 20 spots in the WTA Tour rankings to 75 as the tour approaches the clay court season.

Venus Williams -13 (#87 to #100)

The veteran is coming to the end of her career so it is unlikely we will see many more amazing performances that took her to multiple Grand Slam titles. She reached the second round here before running into Barty and fell back 13 ranking points from the loss having made a fourth round here 12 months ago.

Anett Kontaveit -6 (#23 to #29)

Of the top players inside the seeding positions, Kontaveit dropped the most of anyone – six places. Having had a good year so far, and still making a fourth round, unfortunately Kontaveit made a semi-final here last year which meant she copped a 270-point deficit from bowing out in the Round of 16. She still sits inside the top 30, but only just.
