The stacked WTA 500 event in Dubai kicked off with a bang, though it was more about the one-sided results than anything else. All five matches that took place were in straight sets, including a couple of one-sided thrashings. In the end, the two seeds out on court in second seed Barbora Krejcikova and sixth seed Iga Swiatek moved through to the second round, seeing off Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia and Russian Daria Kasatkina respectively.

Swiatek only dropped three games in her big win over Kasatkina, bettered only by Czech Petra Kvitova, who found form by destroying Italian Camila Giorgi, 6-2 6-0. In the other two results, Romanian Simona Halep took care of United States’ Alison Riske relatively comfortably, whilst American Jessica Pegula proved that bit more consistent than young compatriot Coco Gauff to advance through to the Round of 16.

Winning just her third match for the season, Kvitova has had a forgettable start to 2022, with the world number 25 and 28-time WTA Tour title winner not able to build momentum. She won against Arantxa Rus in Sydney – albeit in a three-set struggle – and took care of Jule Niemeier in St Petersburg. She is yet to win back-to-back matches though, with first round losses in both the Australian Open – Sorana Cirstea – and Adelaide International – Priscilla Hon – to far lower ranked opponents. Kvitova is likely to take on top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the Round of 16, with the Belarusian set to play young Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk later today.
