No seeded players remain in the Dubai WTA 500 event after the last remaining seed bowed out in the quarter finals. It has been a remarkably open draw this tournament and it proved that once again, with two-time winner Simona Halep toppling eighth seed Ons Jabeur in straight sets. The former world number one proved too strong, continuing her great form to win 6-4 6-3 in an hour and 20 minutes to advance through to the semi-finals of the event.

Halep will now take on former Top 5 talent Jelena Ostapenko who came back from the death to see off Czech left-hander Petra Kvitova. The pair engaged in a marathon three-set match, where Kvitova twice had the chance to serve for the match in the second set, and had a mini-break in the deciding set at 4-2, before Ostapenko found a way to win in two hours and 39 minutes, claiming the deciding tiebreaker 11-9 and getting up, 5-7 7-5 7-6.

Meanwhile, Russian Veronika Kudermetova booked her place in the final four at Dubai with a three-set win over lucky loser Jil Teichmann. Her Swiss opponent certainly did not go away easily, taking out the second during the two-hour and 23-minute contest. Kudermetova won 6-2 5-7 6-4 to win through to the semi-finals, winning 42.3 per cent of her first serve return points compared to her opponents’ 32.4 per cent.

In the late match between two qualifiers, 2019 Roland Garros runner-up Marketa Vondrousova saw off fellow young talent, Dayana Yastremska. Despite the Ukrainian going to 4-3 in the second set at one stage, the Czech hit back to win the final three games of that set and claim a 7-5 6-4 victory. She now takes on the 31st ranked Kudermetova in the semi-finals, and Vondrousova is the lowest ranked remaining player in the event at 38th in the world.
