“I believed in the things which we were doing in the beginning of the year, and we still keep doing them, so it’s not about winning or losing, but if you still continue doing these things, I believe the results and the success are going to come,” Pliskova said. “We keep doing that. It’s not like it would be super lucky that I just started to play well. I think it’s a process.”
WTA Tour wrap: Pliskova and Giorgi set up final clash
TWO upset wins have set up a huge National Bank Open final in Montreal tomorrow, as fourth seed Karolina Pliskova toppled top seed Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets while Camila Giorgi earned a finals berth with another win over a higher-ranked opposition in Jessica Pegula, tearing back momentum to steal victory off the American.
The first clash was Pliskova all the way, as the Czech number one elevated her game to take down world number three Belarusian, Sabalenka. She heads into her third singles final for the season after disposing of Sabalenka 6-3 6-4 in 81 minutes, firing on all cylinders throughout the comprehensive victory.
“Amazing feeling to be in another final this year,” Pliskova said. “I think I was super solid today. Just did everything what I was supposed to do to win this match. Played smart. My serve was pretty good, I have to say.”
While Pliskova trailed early in the second set credit to an early break from Sabalenka, the Czech steadied and fired off 10 aces and won 78.4 per cent of her first serve points off a 71 per cent clip to control proceedings.
