WTA Tour wrap: Top two seeds on track for Budapest final

YULIA Putintseva and Danielle Collins are on track to face off in a mouth-watering final after the pair won their respective quarter finals at the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest overnight. The number one and two seeds respectively need one more win to advance through to the final, but play much lower ranked opponents in the semi-finals.

Top seed Putintseva knocked off Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova in three sets after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker 6-7 6-0 7-5, to advance through to the final four. Meanwhile Collins accounted for the last American in the draw in Argentina’s Paula Ormaechea, 6-1 6-4. Now Putintseva must overcome home nation hope, 170th ranked Hungarian Dalma Galfi after the 22 year-old defeated Olga Danilovic in straight sets, 6-4 6-2. Collins faces Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina who is just inside the Top 100 at 95th in the world.

In Prague, there was a real mix of winners when it came to quarter finals victors, as Barbora Krejcikova knocked off compatriot Katerina Siniakova in an all-seeded Czech clash. The Roland Garros champion, Krejcikova won 6-4 6-0 in just 66 minutes to advance through to the semi-finals to take on China’s Xinyu Wang. The unseeded Chinese talent defeated Grace Min in straight sets, 6-3 6-3 to send the last American in the draw packing. Meanwhile in other results, eighth seed Czech Tereza Martincova kept the chance for an all-Czech final in Prague alive with a 6-2 6-2 win over Slovakian Viktoria Kuzmova. Martincova will now face Belgian ninth seed Greet Minnen, who equally dominated Australian Storm Sanders, 6-2 6-1.

In the rain-affected Lausanne Ladies Open in Switzerland, the last two Round of 16 matches were completed with second seed Frenchwoman Fiona Ferro and unseeded Kazakhstan talent Zarina Diyas moving through to the last eight. Unfortunately for the duo, having to do the double would be too much, and both fell to other Frenchwomen in Clara Burel and fifth seed Carolina Garcia respective. With two French representatives through to the semis, the other two decided were between non-French players, as top seed Tamara Zidansek knocked off Italian Lucia Bronzetti in three tough sets 6-4 4-6 6-3, while Romanian Maryna Zanevska defeated Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva in straight sets 7-5 6-4.
