WTA Tour wrap: Upsets aplenty as rain delays continue
THE Round of 16 has continued in Hungary and Czech Republic overnight, with the Ladies Open in Switzerland seeing yesterday’s delayed matches complete before rain forced proceedings to a stop once more with three of the six Round of 16 matches suspended until tomorrow.
In Hungary, just second seed Danielle Collins survived in a day of upsets as she defeated Hungarian hometown hopeful Reka-Luca Jani, earning quickest win rights with the one-hour and 25-minute sweep, 7-5 6-0. Despite being challenged early on, Collins executed the bagel second set by winning close to 90 per cent of Jani’s first serve points, and winning 57.8 per cent of the total points. Collins’ compatriot and third seed Bernarda Pera could not compete with a hungry Anhelina Kalinina, who claimed a 7-5 6-3 upset. Jani’s two Hungarian compatriots were much more fortunate in their own matches, as Panna Udvardy impressed with a 7-6(4) 6-2 upset of sixth seed Aliaksandra Sasnovich while Dalma Galfi overcame Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2 7-5.
At Prague, a mixed bag of results were had with two three-setters between unseeded foes going the full hog to two-plus hours each, as Wang Xinyu and Storm Sanders claimed come from behind wins over En Shu Liang and Nuria Parrizas Diaz, respectively. Second seed Barbora Krejcikova claimed the quickest win of the day in one hour and 37 minutes, defeating Belgian Ysaline Bonaventura 7-6(2) 6-4 despite firing eight double faults for just two aces. Eighth seed Greet Minnen did what Bonaventura could not, claiming a 6-3 7-6(3) victory over Russian Anastasia Gasanova in one hour and 45 minutes.
At the Ladies Open in Switzerland, three matches were delayed with fifth seed Caroline Garcia, and unseeded duo Kamilla Rakhimova and Stefanie Voegele all holding leads – however marginally – and readying to pick up where they left again tomorrow. Meanwhile, top seed Slovenian Tamara Zidansek overcame Luxembourg’s Mandy Minella 6-2 7-5 in one hour and 37 minutes as Natalia Vikhlyantseva and Lucia Bronzetti both claimed huge scalps with speed. Vikhlyantseva was the quickest winner of the day with an excellent 57-minute upset of seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, winning a whopping 86.7 per cent of her first serve points in the process. Bronzetti was not far behind, defeating eighth seed Russian Anna Blinkova 6-1 6-2 in just 64 minutes.
