Year in review – 2019: Novak Djokovic
AFTER holding the number one ranking for most of the year, Novak Djokovic was pipped at the post by Rafael Nadal to drop back to number two in the world.
Rank: #2
Wins: 57
Losses: 11
Titles: 5
Prize Money: $13,277,228
The Serbian had a terrific start to the year, winning the Australian Open in January with a straights sets smashing over Nadal, then claimed Wimbledon in July to back up his title win in 2018. He also took home the titles at the ATP Masters 1000 in both Madrid and Paris, as well as the Japan Open Tennis Championships. It is hard to look past his Wimbledon final victory over Roger Federer in what was a five set-epic, getting it done 7-6 1-6 7-6 4-6 13-12. Djokovic was also a step away from the Roland Garros final, going down in the semis against Dominic Thiem in what was another five set epic, 2-6 6-3 5-7 7-5 5-7. The US Open was less fruitful for the Serbian number one, having to retire against 24th ranked Stan Wawrinka in the Round of 16, though was trailing two sets to love.
In 2019, Djokovic held an impressive 57-11 win-loss record, including his seven-game unbeaten run on grass at Wimbledon where it was his only tournament on the surface. He was fairly comprehensive in victory after winning the first set, saluting 54 of a possible 59 times, but lost eight of a possible 15 matches when going to a deciding set. This meant of his 11 losses, seven went to a third set and one was that fifth set loss to Thiem at Roland Garros.
Overall, while Djokovic did slip down a ranking spot, he showed he is still very much a danger to any opponent with his slick hitting ability on either side of his body.
