PROFILE

One of the NAB League’s big improvers who truly got to prove her worth in 2021, Cadhla Schmidli was a key figure among an Eastern Ranges side which extracted the best of itself this year. The 176cm tall defender provided great aerial solidity on the last line and helped drive her side out of danger, averaging 10.1 disposals and 2.8 rebound 50s per her eight games. She went on to represent Vic Metro and even earned a two-game VFLW berth with Hawthorn, upon returning from an injury which sidelined her during the NAB League finals series. STRENGTHS:
  • Intercepting
  • Reading the play
  • Vertical leap
  • Rebounding
KEY IMPROVEMENT:
  • Kicking consistency
Schmidli was an ultra-reliable figure in defence for Eastern this season, often proving the last line and one which had plenty of work to do. The 18-year-old has a handy vertical leap and used that when impacting aerially, able to either spoil the ball or take a relieving mark. She got in such positions through shrewd reading of the play and with those two traits combined, made for a very solid intercept outlet. With ball in hand, Schmidli also sought to drive her side out of defence. Of her average 10.1 disposals in the NAB League, 8.3 came via foot which is indicative of her usual style. She often got good penetration on those clearing kicks and was even entrusted with some of the kick-in duties at representative level with Vic Metro, showing her kicking can be a strength in the rebounding sense. In terms of improvements, the kicking consistency tag is a bit of a broad term which aims to suggest Schmidli is a capable kicker but can sharpen up her decision making and execution across the four quarters. With the pressure gauge high during this year’s Under 19 National Championships, many players were rushed in possession and the defence is the third you want to ensure you remain in possession. Overall, Schmidli clearly has some interest at the next level given she earned a draft combine invite this year, and it came off the back of some promising form. Her best attributes suit the defensive post well, offering sound intercept play and the ability to set up her side in transition with booming kicks out of the defensive arc.

QUOTES

2021:
“Schmidli has come on in leaps and bounds in her second season, after only playing the one game in 2020 due to the global pandemic. She played eight in 2021, averaging 10.1 disposals and 2.8 rebounds to earn a place with Vic Metro where she did not get overawed playing both matches.” – via Draft Central’s 2021 AFLW Draft Guide “(Schmidli) held up really well against a side that uses the ball well going inside 50, and she’d just be there to cut off a lot of attacks really well. Often playing as the deepest defender, her read of the game and command of the backline was really good, and her ball use out of deep defence gave the Ranges the best chance to get out and start a dangerous counter attack.” – Declan Reeve via “Top Performers: NAB League Girls Round 7” “In just her second NAB League outing, Schmidli showed marked improvement from her debut last season to finish as one of the round’s most valuable defenders. Armed with a handy vertical leap and good height, she was able to clunk three marks and set Eastern going the other way with three rebound 50s among her 10 kicks for the day.” – Michael Alvaro via “Top Performers: NAB League Girls Round 1”
