The first Australian UFC champion, Robert Whittaker became the pride of his nation after claiming the interim Middleweight strap in 2017. While it was not made undisputed in the octagon, what can never be taken away from Whittaker is that his two decision wins against Yoel Romero were absolute wars befitting of a champion. It all came on the back of an undefeated Middleweight run after transitioning from the Welterweight division in which he won TUF back in 2012. Four finishes in his six fights at 185lbs made him a no-brainer for the Romero match-up, and he could have made an even bigger splash if it were not for injury ruling him out for years at a time. At the age of 28, Whittaker has plenty of time to make his way back to the top of the mountain after going down to Israel Adesanya in the biggest Trans-Tasman MMA bout in history, remaining a fan favourite and the face of the sport down under. There is no opponent booked for 2020 as of yet, with Whittaker a chance to represent Australia in wrestling at the Summer Olympics having qualified for the same event at the 2018 Commonwealth games.
