A dominant wrestler with scary power, former UFC Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has long been a staple of his division dating back to the Strikeforce days. Entering the UFC on the back of a loss for the vacant Strikeforce strap, Woodley clicked into gear after a 3-2 start, fighting only the best contenders on his way to knocking out Robbie Lawler for promotional gold. Two tense and technical defences against Stephen Thompson followed, with fans slightly turned off by the champion’s more reserved and respectful tactics – extending to his third consecutive decision defence against Demian Maia. But Woodley served a reminder of his combination of power and grappling, making light work of Darren Till after over a year on the sidelines to earn his BJJ Black Belt. Woodley’s most recent bout produced an uncharacteristically feeble loss to Kamaru Usman at UFC 235, with an opponent yet to be confirmed and ‘The Chosen One’ pursuing many avenues outside of the cage.
