Weekend wash-up: VFLW – Round 8

IT was not a good weekend for the home sides in the Victorian Football League (VFL) Women’s competition, as five out of the six home teams went down to the away sides in their respective matches. The only home win was perhaps the biggest win, as the Western Bulldogs knocked the Geelong Cats off the top of the VFLW ladder. But with the average round eight winning margin being 15 points, wins certainly did not come easy for those victors.

Essendon 3.3 (21) defeated by Casey Demons 6.11 (47)

In a morning of scattered rain and cold wind, it was the Casey Demons who recorded their second win of the season. With only one behind a piece in the opening quarter, it looked like Essendon was really going to push the Demons in the conditions. But the away side stepped up after that, kicking two goals in each quarter to record a 26-point win at RAMS Arena.

Melbourne AFLW defender, Katherine Smith is certainly enjoying her midfield role at Casey, as she continued her good form with a 22 disposal game. She was outdone by fellow AFLW defender, Bianca Jakobsson, who tore it up in the back line with 20 disposals, six marks and nine tackles. Casey’s leading goal kicker, Kaila Bentvelzen also impressed with one goal and 18 disposals and she was joined by Harriet Cordner, who almost shared identical stats with her. Cordner also kicked a major and racked up 17 disposals on the day.

Although the Bombers didn’t get the win, they sure were glad to welcome forward, Danielle Ponter into the side. Ponter kicked two goals from her four disposals and also laid two tackles. In terms of disposals, Jessica Trend led the way for Essendon with 20 touches, as well as two marks and six tackles. Speaking of tackles, Hayley Bullas was back to her ferocious best, laying 18 tackles for the second time this season. Carlton recorded another close VFLW loss on Saturday, going down to Melbourne Uni by a goal. The Blues stormed out of the blocks with five goals in the first quarter and looked like they were going to win their first game since round three. But the Mugars fought back in the second quarter, keeping Carlton scoreless and kicking three goals themselves. It was then extremely close in the second half with Melbourne Uni scoring 2.4 to Carlton’s 1.4, which ultimately led them to a much-needed victory.

While AFLW Best and Fairest, Emma Kearney was kept quiet with 12 disposals, she led the way for tackles on the ground, laying nine of them. Oakleigh Chargers forward, Isabella Geitzmann also did well, kicking a goal from her five disposals.

She was complemented by Lauren Pearce, Stephanie Normington-Dickens, Nat Exon and Stephanie Simpson who all kicked one goal for the day. Melbourne AFLW midfielder, Elise O’Dea was deemed the best-on-ground for the Falcons with another solid outing in the middle of the ground.

For Williamstown, Georgia Harris was the only multiple goal kicker with two majors next to her name. Bendigo Pioneers captain, Megan Williamson also got on the board with the first goal of the match, boosting her confidence in the yellow and blue.
