Team of the Week: VFLW – Round 8

AFTER their impressive wins over the weekend, Melbourne University and Casey have three representatives each in this week’s best 22. Meanwhile, Essendon, Williamstown and NT only have one player each who made the cut after their disappointing defeats in round eight of the Victorian Football League (VFL) Women’s competition.

Jess Duffin was exceptional for the Seagulls against Darebin and was a shinning light, despite their loss on Sunday. Her 31 disposals was a massive feat and her 25 kicks were truly impressive. Joining Duffin as a lock in the Team of the Week was Collingwood forward, Sophie Alexander. She kicked a round-high four goals to accompany her 18 disposals.

The AFL Draft Central VFLW Team of the Week has seen a regular set of defenders perform well week in, week out. The likes of Meghan McDonald, Jayde Van Dyk, Jacqueline Graham and Courtney Ugle have seen their names appear in the best 22 on many occasions this season, which is reward for their defensive efforts.

Alice Edmonds played a prolific ruck role for Richmond in the absence of AFLW North Melbourne ruck, Emma King. Edmonds gathered 17 touches as well as giving the Richmond midfield silver service. She was unlucky to miss out on selection this week, but was edged out of the team by Carlton’s Breann Moody.

Williamstown pair, Georgia Harris and Jenna Bruton are also unlucky to miss out on a place in this week’s best 22, after each of them had standout performances. Harris was a spearhead up forward with two goals while Bruton recorded 27 disposals. However, it was not enough for her to claim a spot this week with teammate, Duffin edging her out.
