AFLW Friday Talking Points: Round 7

IN a huge Friday night action-packed game of AFL Women’s footy, the Western Bulldogs registered their third win in a row, accounting for the Geelong by 12 points. Despite a slow start from both sides, the Bulldogs got into their rhythm and also survived a late Geelong comeback to take the win, 3.10 (28) to 2.4 (16).

TALKING POINTS

Low scoring first term reflective of how the game went

Both sides went goalless in the opening term, and in defiance of the cliché it was actually representative of how the game went. It was very congested footy with much of the action taking place between the 50m arcs.

Neither side really got an opportunity to score in the opening term either. The Bulldogs had one shot from their nine inside 50s, while the Cats had two shots on goal from their seven inside 50s in the opening term.

Elisabeth Georgostathis had a breakout game

Elisabeth Georgostathis had an absolutely stellar game last night. Playing at both ends of the ground, she was not saving goals but creating chances for them too.

She ultimately finished with 23 touches, two marks and a whopping six tackles, while also registering a score of one goal one on the board.

Where did Geelong’s good early season form go?

For a number of weeks earlier this season, Geelong were looking like a much improved side from what we saw in 2021, despite not getting the wins on the board.

That could not have been further from what we witnessed last night at the Whitten Oval.

They were outclassed by the Bulldogs right across the ground, and for the vast majority of the match did not look like they were in with a shot of winning.

One thing that was evident tonight was that they need to create a game plan B, when their plan A of making the game ugly and contested does not work for them.

That one win really did reinvigorate the Bulldogs season

A few weeks ago the question was raised about whether the Bulldogs win over Richmond was the win they needed to reinvigorate their season. Well, the answer seems to be yes. Including the Richmond win and ever since then, the Bulldogs have found some ripping form.

The Western Bulldogs should have won by more

The Bulldogs were by far the more dominant side tonight and should have won by a much bigger margin if they had kicked straight. They kicked 10 behinds tonight, and the vast majority of those were neither rushed by the Cats or quickly kicked in running play.

NEXT WEEK

The Bulldogs do not have to wait long for their next clash, as they take on the Suns on Tuesday night.

Geelong has a much bigger break before their next encounter. They have an eight-day break before they have to do battle with the Tigers at the Swinburne Centre.
