Stat Leaders: 2022 AFL Women’s – Round 8

THE AFL Women’s Round 8 stat sheet is dominated by Brisbane after the Lions’ record-breaking win on Sunday. Emily Bates was among the standouts, but plenty more players produced big numbers across the latest weekend of AFLW action. Find out who as we take a look at this week’s stat leaders.

Bates was one of five Lions to feature atop the stat charts this week, as her side broke the record for the greatest total (98 points) and winning margin (74) in competition history. The midfielder racked up highs of 31 disposals and 18 handballs, sharing the lead in both categories with a couple of regulars.

Those were Adelaide powerhouse Anne Hatchard and North Melbourne ball magnet Ash Riddell. The former had a standalone high of 20 kicks among her 31 touches, while the latter’s 18 handballs came amid yet another 30-plus disposal performance.

Looking at Bates’ impressive teammates, and there were always going to be a couple of goalkickers atop the pile. Four players booted three goals each in Round 8, including Lions Sophie Conway and Jesse Wardlaw. Elsewhere, Tahlia Hickie lead the hitouts (30) and the powerful Catherine Svarc laid a whopping 16 tackles as her side dismantled West Coast.

Other impressive performances this past weekend saw Collingwood’s Jaimee Lambert step up to snare three majors, inspiring the Pies to a crucial win over the Western Bulldogs. Gold Coast’s Tara Bohanna matched that feat, though it wasn’t quite enough to help her Suns get over the line agains St Kilda. It was no surprise to see Amy McDonald among the top ball winners too, as she won eight clearances in Geelong’s win over Richmond.

McDonald leads the league for both handballs and tackles, sharing the latter stat with Svarc. After another massive outing, Hatchard still has more marks than anyone else, while Riddell is clear in both disposals and kicks. There is a new leader alongside long-time goalkicking topper Ashleigh Woodland, with Melbourne’s Tayla Harris joining her on 15 majors with two rounds to play.
