Hornets buzz to shock victory over Bull Sharks

DESPITE many games going as expected last weekend in the QAFLW, there was one result which proved quite the upset, as Aspley handed Bond University its first loss of the year.

Bond University did all the attacking in the opening minutes of the first term, but just could not capitalise. Aspley’s defensive pressure was intense, and it took Bond Uni almost six minutes to put any score on the board, and it was only a behind.

They finally got their first goal on the board six minutes later, when Lily Tarlinton stepped around her opponent and kicked truly.

Aspley finally got on the board at the 17-minute mark through Chloe Dower, and suddenly the margin was back down to two goals.

Michaela Campbell kicked Aspley’s second in the final minute of the term, and so it was the Hornets that took a four-point lead into the first change.

The action was free flowing and low scoring again early in the second term. Much of the play was between the arcs and it took both sides more then eight minutes for either of them to put any score on the board. The first goal of the term was Aspley’s, when Rachel Vetter kicked truly from the back of a pack to stretch the margin out to 10 points.

Vetter’s goal would ultimately be the only one for the term, as neither side could get any real territorial advantage in the tussle.

Bond Uni did reduce the margin back to eight with a few behinds, but overall would have been very frustrated with their first half. They had plenty of chances to score, arguably much more then Aspley did, but they just could not make those chances count.

The third term belonged to the Hornets.

It took the sides much less time to score in the third term, with Vetter kicking her second for Aspley only two minutes into the term.

Aspley continued to do much of the attacking, but could not convert for the number of times they had it inside their forward 50.

Abbey Hewitt then kicked Aspley’s second of the term to stretch the margin out even further and things were starting to look a bit dire for the Bull Sharks.

Campbell then kicked her second for Aspley and suddenly the margin was out to 27 points.

Tarlinton then kicked her second as the Bull Sharks stopped the flow and brought the margin back slightly.

As the teams turned for home the margin was still 21 points, and an upset was brewing in Robina.

However, it was the Bull Sharks who got the jump on the Hornets in the last term, when Annie Muir kicked the first goal of the term to bring the margin back to 15 points.

Tarlinton then kicked her third and the margin was back down to nine, but then Courtney Daniec booted a miraculous to stem the flow for the Hornets.

Jess Maher then kicked a goal for the Bull Sharks, but with 90 seconds left it was a case of too little too late for Bond Uni.

That was ultimately the case as the Hornets ran out nine point winners in the end.

For the Hornets, Angela Lingard, Maddison Kawa and Holly Monaghan were all impressive in their respective roles, while Ruby Sargent-Wilson and Molly Ritson were both impressive for Bond Uni in what was a frustrating loss for them.
