AFLW Sign and Trade Period Wrap – Days 1 & 2

THE OFFICIAL AFLW Sign and Trade Period has begun, so let us take a look at all the ongoing re-signing and trade news from across the competition.

TRADE

There have only been two deals completed in the first 48 hours of the trade period.

The biggest of them was arguably Nicola Stevens, who has left Carlton to head to St Kilda, with the Saints sending pick 28 the other way.

The only other trade was between Geelong and Richmond, and it was a straight swap which saw Ingrid Houtsma head down the highway to the Cattery, and Stephanie Williams head the other way to Punt Road.

SIGN/RE-SIGN

There may not have been many trades done over the past 48 hours, but there has been certainly plenty of signing news.

It is out with one Irish star at North Melbourne and in with two more, as the Kangaroos signed a pair of Gaelic stars. Reigning LGFA Footballer of the Year Vikki Wall from County Meath and Erika O’Shea from Cork will make the trek Down Under next season and play for the Kangaroos.

The expansion sides have also continued to pre-sign players ahead of their entries into the competition.

Essendon has gone back to well of its VFLW side to snap up some more players, with Renee Tierney, Eloise Ashley-Cooper and former AFLW Blue and Lion Bella Ayre to all don the sash at AFLW level later this year.

Although this news was announced a little while ago, it was made official today that Hawthorn has signed former AFLW Dee Tegan Cunningham.

In more expansion news, West Australian pair Tessa Doumanis and Abbey Dowrick have put pen to paper with Port Adelaide, and will travel across the Nullarbor to join Alberton this season.

List concessions?

It was announced today that three clubs – Gold Coast, St Kilda and West Coast – were approved for list concessions.

Gold Coast’s concessions are:

  • They can pre sign four mature-aged players (anyone born before 2004) that had previously nominated for the draft
  • They also received a compensation pick at the end of the second round (currently pick 49, equivalent of pick three in the Queensland pool)

St Kilda’s concessions are:

  • They can re-list Clara Fitzpatrick
  • They receive a first round compensation pick (currently pick 28, or equivalent to 15 in the Victorian pool) with the proviso that it can be used to trade for a player (which they have done so in the trade for Nicola Stevens)

West Coast’s concessions are:

  • They can pre sign four mature-aged players (aka anyone born before 2004) that had previously nominated for the draft
  • They receive three compensation picks – two first rounders (currently 15 and 36, which is the equivalent of picks two and four in the WA pool) as well as an end of second rounder (currently number 48, which is the equivalent of WA pick 6)
