No rest for the QAFLW this long weekend

WHILE some leagues will enjoy a break over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, the QAFLW will not, so fans have a full round of exciting football to enjoy with their feet up.

The pick of the fixtures this weekend is a potentially enthralling clash out at Giffin Park when Coorparoo take on the University of Queensland (UQ).

It is a second versus third clash, with the potential to shake things up on the ladder as the QAFLW continues to catch matches up this week.

Last time these two sides met was back in round five, and Coorparoo caused quite the upset that afternoon.

After keeping the Red Lionesses scoreless in the opening term, the Kings went on to win by 31 points.

Jenae Govan, Tori Groves-Little and Chelsea Winn all kicked two majors each for Coorparoo that day, while Megan Hunt, Jacqui Russell and Kaitlyn Day were all among UQ’s best in what was their first loss of the season.

Despite the sizeable scoreboard buffer to the Kings, UQ actually won many of the stats.

UQ finished with five more disposals then the Kings, and also had seven more inside 50s. They had significantly more marks then Coorparoo did, but Coorparoo had far, far more tackles then the Red Lionesses.

Sally Young led the disposals for Coorparoo that day with 17, while Hunt lead the disposal count that day for the Red Lionesses with 19.

This weekend starts a big week for UQ, with three games coming up in a short stretch of time.

Yes, after this weekend’s game against the Kings UQ need to back up again on Wednesday night to catch up their Round 8 game against Maroochydore that had to get postponed due to the wet weather. This means they will certainly be trying to avoid any injuries against the Kings so they can make it through this week.

In other matches this weekend, Maroochydore also start a big week of matches when they take on the ladder leaders Southport. Aspley and Yeronga South Brisbane will both be hoping to bounce back from last week’s losses when they battle out at Graham Road,
